In these works on paper, the act of sewing references the strength and resiliency of community as well as the gesture of connection to the lineage of women who built, and continue to build, unity through sewing and making. This body of work Recollect and Percept reflects on notions of femininity, vulnerability, and our response to repressive environments.
Using silk organza, reclaimed plastics, gouache and ink on Rives BFK paper, I connect this spectrum of materials with thread to create three-dimensional paper sculptures that exude both vulnerability and strength. The organza forms, stitched and overlaid, attempt to simultaneously abide by and betray the boundaries of the gouache paper surface. The organza reveals the fragility of its edges in frays, molds to its slivered contents, and it contorts itself against the deep red stitching. In inhospitable environments we attempt to adapt; we weather, unravelling under the unbearable weight, but in community we rise and foster our spark. These forms are delicate, yet they adapt; they are punctured and weighty, yet they shimmer and float. Instead of becoming an opaque fragile container, the layered organza manipulates light and reveals a subtle interior. Through my process and the creation of this work, I embrace and subvert the notion of femininity as inherently delicate and expose the beauty of interconnectedness.
